Welcome to the new website of Merton Abbey Primary School.

Welcome message from our Co-Chairs of Governors

Greetings from the Merton Abbey Primary School’s Governing Body for the 2018-19 academic year!  We would like to introduce ourselves as the new Co-Chairs of Governors. As Co-Chairs, we have been elected to share the role of leading the governing body. We both have children in the school and are passionate about the education and well-being of the pupils at Merton Abbey.

With a welcoming atmosphere and a community feel, Merton Abbey Primary celebrates a diverse pupil population. One major strength of the school is the encouragement of welfare of the children. ‘[School] Leaders have developed a strong culture of safeguarding throughout the school. Staff training is effective and staff are confident and knowledgeable about keeping children safe.’ (OFSTED March 2017) On the parent survey from 2018, 100% of parents surveyed felt safe with their children at the school.

We are also proud of the strength of the school‘s curriculum. ‘The curriculum is well-planned, broad and balanced. Leaders review the curriculum regularly and supplement class teaching with specialist teaching, for example in languages.’ (OFSTED, March 2017) Though testing and results are essential, we also put an emphasis on a well-rounded, wider curriculum. Learning should be enjoyable for children, to instil a foundation for a healthy desire for knowledge that will stay with them throughout their lives.

We acknowledge that the most recent OFSTED report in March 2017 was not at the standard that we would wish. However, we have taken on board all of the required improvements in the report and are making big strides to improve and advance the quality of our education. Senior school leaders and teaching staff have worked tirelessly to find more impactful teaching and assessment methods. For example, standardised tests have been introduced in every year group, in every term, to ensure that teachers’ assessments are accurate. As governors, we feel confident that results are moving in the right direction and welcome OFSTED’s next visit.

If you would like to learn more about our Governing Body, please feel free to get in touch or read our Governors’ Impact Statement that highlights what we did last year.

Sincerely,

Mamie Barden and Frances Cresswell
