    Dear Parents and Carers,

Further to my letter last week, I can now share that only two classes will be closed on Wednesday 1 February at Merton Abbey Primary School:

    • Reception
    • Year 5

All other classes will be opened on Wednesday 1 February.  Further information about subsequent strike days will be shared in due course.

  • Book Hut

    Wed 04 May 2022

To further encourage the children's love of reading, Merton Abbey is delighted to have received a Pop-up Book Hut!  The books are from the Children's Book Project, a registered charity that redistributes thousands of donated books to children and their families across the UK.

The children are invited to 'Have a look and take a book'. Children can choose any book they like to take home and keep. Children can bring any books back that they no longer want.

The beautiful huts give children the chance to explore and own books that they have chosen for themselves. The huts are playful and encourage children to engage with the books inside. We want them to feel enthused about these pre-loved books and motivated to enjoy them at home.

  • British Science Week

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

British Science Week got off to a flying start on Friday with three visitors who use science in their work every day.  The children got to hear from a data scientist, a nutritionist and a forensic scientist.  As well as hearing about the importance of science, the children were also given some inspiring ideas about future careers.

  • World Book Day 2022

    Thu 10 Mar 2022

We celebrated World Book Day this year by dressing up in some fantastic costumes based on our favourite book characters!

We also held a "Reading in Unusual Places" competition and there were some amazing photo entries from both children and staff. The winners were, Theo for Early Years, Rishmika for KS1 and Penny for KS2.  The staff prize went to Mr Oglesby, Year 3 teacher.

    Well done everyone!

  • Merton Abbey – the first school to visit the new Polka Theatre!

    Wed 08 Sep 2021

The Polka Theatre is just opening its doors after a major rebuilding project – and Merton Abbey was the first school to be welcomed back inside.  Children from Year 3 and Year 4 took part in special drama workshops and had a theatre tour.  The children were able to explore all the new and interesting spaces in the theatre.  They got the chance to go on an educational visit out of school once again and it was extra special that the visit was to our old friends at Polka.  We are very grateful to the team at the Polka Theatre and we are looking forward to doing lots more exciting work with them this year.

  • Polka Theatre - puppetry workshops

    Fri 25 Jun 2021

Children in Y3, Y5 and Y6 had a real treat today.  Liz Fost from the Polka Theatre led puppetry workshops for each class.  The children explored the messages and meanings in traditional tales and even had the chance to make their own puppets.  Thanks to Liz and the Polka Theatre for creating this opportunity for the children.
