  • Sponsored skipping

    Tue 22 Mar 2016

This term the children have been raising money for the British Heart Foundation as well as money for outdoor equipment for the school. The British Heart Foundation have given us a school set of skipping ropes to participate in a sponsored skip with the aim to skip at least a thousand times before the end of this term. The children have very enthusiastically got involved at play and lunch times and many of them have already beaten their targets! 80% of the money we raise will be sent to the British Heart Foundation. The rest we will use to ensure that our children have more equipment to play with. Sponsor money is due on or before Wednesday 23rd March 2016.

  • Take Part Tuesday

    Tue 22 Mar 2016

In Reception and Nursery parents and carers are being invited into the classroom to see how their children are learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage. This gives parents an opportunity to see how we teach and to get involved with their child’s learning.

Our first Take Part Tuesday was a wonderful success and we would like to thank all the parents who came to join in. The children were very excited to show their parents how they learn in school and as the photos show everyone enjoyed getting involved with the children's learning.

Nursery and Reception will have more Take Part Tuesdays next term so look out for your invite!

  • Science in Y4

    Wed 16 Mar 2016
In Y4 the children have been learning about digestion and the different functions of parts of the digestive system. They looked at the role that teeth play in the digestive process, and how important caring for our teeth is.They did an experiment to test how sugar effects tooth decay by placing boiled eggs into different drinks, for example milk, coke cola, orange juice and water. They made predictions about what they thought would happen to the different eggs based on the liquid they were resting in and continue to observe the changes to the eggs on a daily basis.

  • Early morning sport

    Tue 15 Mar 2016

On Tuesday morning instead of going to assembly Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 got active out in the playground. The children participated in the first of many 'rolling' netball games. The children competed in their house groups to see who could score the most points by passing the ball netball style- the only difference was that to score a point they had to roll the ball to knock over some bowling pins. The children scored and umpired the matches themselves and supported their peers by encouraging them and cheering them on. The children showed good sportsmanship by shaking each other's hands at the end of a game and acknowledging how well their opponents had played. It was a very exciting start to the day!

On Friday Merton Abbey celebrated World Book Day. Some of these activities included making crazy hats for a Mad Hatter's tea party, designing and creating slices of cake eaten by Bruce Bogtrotter, writing picnic poems and making finger puppets of Harry Potter characters inspired by 'The Mysterious Ticking Noise'. Throughout the day the children listened to stories read to them by staff and parent visitors and had plenty of opportunities to read a book themselves.
